How long does the MBA General Management program last?

This is a part-time executive program which can be completed in four semesters alongside a participant’s employment. Graduates receive an officially recognized Master's degree.

How many attendance days does the program require?

Great care was taken during the development of the program to achieve a balance between required attendance days and self-directed learning. In total, there are 66 required attendance days in week blocks (Wednesday to Saturday or Monday to Saturday) distributed over four semesters. The ISM does not offer purely distance learning-based courses as it believes that it is only possible to achieve a maximum learning effect through face-to-face contact with lecturers and fellow students. Decision-oriented managers can only be developed through the critical reflection of opinions, experiences and attitudes.

Which degree will I receive upon completion of the program? Is it a recognized academic degree?

Students successfully completing this Master’s program will receive the academic degree of "Master of Business Administration (MBA) General Management." This is an officially recognized Master's degree. It fulfils all the criteria of the so-called Bologna requirements and is therefore internationally recognized.

How will the application-oriented relevance of the program be ensured?

The "MBA General Management" is designed as an application-oriented program. All lectures have been designed to be directly related to the concrete duties and functions of international operating companies. This is partly realized in the context of lectures, but also using case studies and planning games. Additionally, a particularly important role is played by the numerous assigned essays focusing on topical issues taking place in the participant’s own working environment. This also applies to the final Master’s thesis.

Is it possible to specialize?

The "MBA General Management" is structured as a generalized study program. The participant acquires those competencies necessary for employment in an international management position.

How high are the study fees and are these fees tax deductable?

The study fees for the MBA General Management program are 24,800 Euro. This also includes matriculation and exam fees. As a general rule, the costs for this executive development program are generally tax deductable for German taxpayers (see BFH Judgement, AZ: VIR 24/95). However, a case-by-case application is required.

Where do the courses take place?

The lectures take place at the ISM Campus in either Dortmund or Munich.

Does the program include study abroad at a foreign university?

Four block weeks take place in the USA, in Brussels, India and China. These renowned universities were selected from the 130 international partner universities of the ISM.

Are there any further costs regarding the abroad modules?

The study fees of 24,800 Euro include all four abroad modules. Participants only have to pay flight and accommodation.

Do all four universities offer accommodation?

The University of California, the Indian Institute of Management and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University offer accommodation on campus. A prerequisite is a prior request well in advance. Regarding the block week at the Solvay Brussels School Economics and Management, students may book a logistic package, including hotel accommodation etc.

How much time should I plan for this education?

The MBA General Management program is a further education program which is equivalent to 90 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). One ECT represents approximately 30 working hours. In total, the program is comprised of a time investment of 2,700 hours (including the writing of a Master’s thesis). The hours are distributed over 24 months, with 66 required attendance days within this period and 53 requested holidays. Courses can be attended while continuing to work in cooperation with the student’s employer or by claiming the maximum of 28 vacation days per year. The rest of the time is used for preparation and revision of lectures, the reading of instruction materials and case studies, the writing of essays and presentations as well as the writing of a Master’s thesis.

How many study places has the ISM created for the MBA General Management program?

A maximum of 20 participants at each campus are admitted to the program per winter semester.

When is the application deadline for the MBA General Management program?

The MBA General Management program begins once a year, in the summer semester. The application deadline is February the 29th of that year.

Which formal admission requirements must be fulfilled?

The MBA General Management is a further education program. To meet the formal entry requirements a participant must have completed a TOEFL-Certificate. Furthermore, they must show proof of at least three years of consecutive work experience. The recognition of degrees from abroad will be evaluated on an individual basis. The necessary documents, translated into German or English by an official translating office must be included with the application. This includes certificates, grades reports, degree program descriptions as well as a short description of the course syllabi.

Which language competencies are required for admission to the MBA General Management program?

The lectures take place in English. This entails the necessity of documenting one’s English competence which has to be certified with the TOEFL certificate.

What are the admissions procedures?

Once an application with all necessary documents (application form) has been submitted, the admissions requirements are evaluated by the ISM admissions committee within a period of two weeks. If the decision is positive, the applicant is invited to a personal interview in order to get to know the applicant better. Following this interview, the applicant will be informed of his/her admission to the program within one week. At the same time, two copies of the study contract will be sent to the applicant. Both copies are to be signed and returned to the ISM. The applicant will then receive a copy back with an official ISM signature, together with all program-relevant regulations and general information about the start of the program.

Does the Master’s degree entitle me to qualify for a doctoral program?

Yes, the MBA General Management Master’s degree qualifies graduates to enter a doctoral program in a German or foreign university.

What kinds of financing and subsidies are available to students?

Student loans for Master’s students are, for example, available from the kfw-Förderbank with the stipulation that the applicant be under 30 years old. Bachelor degree graduates (not diploma or Master’s degree graduates) under 30 can also receive financing from the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG). In addition, ISM students can apply for financial subsidies from funding institutions or foundations.

Are study information events organized by the ISM?

Yes. Study information evenings are regularly organized by the ISM at which time people interested in the MBA General Management program have the opportunity to get to know the ISM campus as well as to inform themselves about program details. A presentation by Study Program Director Prof. Dr. Frank Rösler outlines the course content and goals of the MBA General Management program as well as possible career perspectives. In addition, those interested can find out more about semester dates, accommodations and financial options. Individual questions can also be answered within the framework of a personal counselling appointment.

What types of accommodations are available in the proximity of the ISM?

There are a wide variety of inexpensive accommodations in the nearby city or in the direct vicinity of the ISM Dortmund. Hotels such as the Tryp Hotel Dortmund, the IBIS Dortmund West and the Steigenberger Hotel are close by.

The ISM Campus in Munich is located in the Karlshoefen, just a few minutes away from the Königsplatz and the main train station, directly in the city centre. Many hotels, for example the IBIS München City or the Motel One München-City-West, are nearby.

Are extracurricular activities offered in addition to normally scheduled lectures?

Student activities are an important part of the educational concept of the ISM and contribute to the success of its programs. The ISM supports the engagement of the many student initiatives and supports particularly engaged students with grants. A variety of student working groups are open to enlisting new members: Two student run business consultancies have been successfully established at the ISM. In addition, the working group "Banking" organizes events in cooperation with banks and analysts. The "Business Forum" regularly invites students to events and discussion evenings with high-ranking executives from business, society and politics. The working group of the study program "Tourism, Event & Hospitality Management" offer contact to leading hotel companies and organize meetings with practitioners about current trends in the hotel industry. The AK trade fair is actively engaged in the event and trade fair sector. The working group IT regularly offers workshops, theme evenings and LAN parties. In the "ISM Sports Club" the ISM students and teams compete in sporting activities against students from other universities.
